Genesi: Venice hosts Salgado after 10 world capitals

240 pictures, 8 years of pictures, a new book and soon a movie

10 cities before Venice where tomorrow it opens to the public (at Tre Oci, Zitelle, Giudecca, until May 11, 2014) and 30 museums on the waiting list. More than 1.500.000 people, at the date of today, have seen Genesi, the last big effort of the Brasilian photographer (and economist) Sebastiao Salgado, curated by his wife Lélia and optimized in five different exhibition sets according to the needs of the hosting institution.

Genesi is not only a show and a pilgrimage (lasting 8 years) of the pair in all the continents: it is a fight to save the planet by starting with the education to respect nature and other beings through images of animals, places (and people) often portrayed in very special and extreme conditions.
Very soon a movie (Shade and Light, signed by Salgado’s son Juliano and Wim Wenders), Genesi at Tre Oci is on 3 exhibition levels and in five chapters. Countless are the didactic workshops for students and adults to teach and practice biodiversity (the WWF is partner of the show in order to widespread its Living Amazonia project and also offers discounts and prizes to its members to join the show).

Now, Salgado and the project: introduced in a crowed Venetian theatre and enriched by a 20 minutes touching slide show (with images that will be not in the show) originally soundtrack by Elias (Salgado’s good friend), it is composed by five sections that are not coinciding with the five continents and hosts medium and large format B/W pictures speaking of Amazonia and its forest (with his Foundation, Terra, Salgado financed two millions of new trees to repopulate the ecosystem), of Congo, New Guinea, Alaska and other countries, gives us back the immense variety and complexity and richness of the planet we’re killing on multiple layers. The mission of Salgado’s pictures is clear and is the manifesto of this gigantic operation (partly financed with reportages before the big crisis of paper publishers happened in the middle of the making of and then thanks to two American donors). We are still able to invert the track if we want to save the earth.

Pianeta Sud, Santuari della Natura, Africa, Grande Nord, Amazonia and Pantanàl: in each of the chapters, the artist kept on tell, whispering and standing on the climax of his feet, also who lives apart from the masses in small villages for 250 people or more and still succeed to adhere to the natural times without alterate the ecosystem.

In Italy we’ve seen until today his migrants and disasters pictures. A book (Dalla Mia Terra alla Terra, Contrasto Books, 160 pages, Euro 19.90) tells about this show and is beside the big, extra format, catalogue (Genesi, Euro 49.99).
This project is signed by a man who is now 70 and is reaching 50 years of marriage with the same woman and often portrays, in Genesi, animals moving in couple (flying or jumping). This is the more political and together the more intimate act of an artist who, extremely prolific, has been the most determining author in the portrait and reportage history as we know both now.
